All Aboard! Next Stop: Owen's Big Boy Room

Our little train fanatic has been ready for his big boy room for quite some time.  A.K.A. Momma's tired of the 1/2 nursery, 1/2 big boy room look!  

We bought his twin sized bed months ago, but instead of getting new decorations --- Owen got a baby brother! Now, that Luke is sleeping in a more predictable pattern, we've had time and energy to work on the projects to complete the room.  

ALL ABOARD! 

The tour train is leaving the station...

During our last visit to the Nevada Southern Railway, we bought the two train signs from the gift shop. 

Brendon attached them to the wall next to Owen's letters and a $7 blue lantern from Amazon was the perfect finishing touch.

The train table has been a work in progress for months.  We found it at a furniture consignment store and knew that with a few little additions it would be perfect for storing all of his trains and tracks. Brendon added trim pieces around the edge so that the tracks wouldn't fall off the edge and a piece of wood at the bottom to keep small trains and tracks from getting lost under the table.  He then spent days and days sanding and painting it to match the room.  Owen loves it! 

Here's the before picture of the table.  You can tell it has been a few months 11 months, since we purchased it, just based on how little Owen looks in the picture.  Those were his 2012 Christmas jammies, which are now man-capris and the sleeves are 3/4 length!  He's changed so much this year. 

What does every little conductor need in his room?  A RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN!  We looked for old railroad crossing signs, but they were way more than we wanted to spend.  With a trip to Lowe's and my silhouette, we had everything we needed to make our own.  And -- let's face it --- we just like having projects!    We use the hooks on the railroad crossing sign to hold his dress up clothes or to set out his uniform for school.  It's been really useful!

Adding the bookshelves to the sides finished it perfectly.  Luckily, Brendon had a great assistant {who was totally willing to stay up past his bedtime} to finish the job!

The room has several personalized touches.  I made the "O is for Owen" sign, added in pictures from our family photo shoot at the train station, and Grandpa Herbeck gave Owen these model railroad trains from his collection. 

I tried to find colors for the room that I wouldn't get sick of quickly and so far I'm loving the navy, gray, and lime.  The curtains are made following this Sew Lined Panel Drapes tutorial.  One of my favorite parts of the room would have to be the Galvanized Pipe Curtain Rods.

 It's been so nice to walk into Owen's room and know it's complete! It feels like a room that he can grow into.  It also doubles nicely as our guest bedroom and doesn't feel too juvenile.... if our family and friends are going to sleeping on a twin bed --- at least it's not a plastic Thomas the Train bed!
