How to bake a diaper cake

Need to cook up a cute baby shower gift?  Try this sweet recipe for diaper cakes!

My friend, Genelle, made one for me when I was pregnant with Owen and I loved it. I waited as long as possible before taking it apart to use the diapers. I just liked looking at all the cute baby things and those tiny little diapers.

So, after getting our invitations to Ellen's "Nature themed" baby shower, Susan and I started cooking up ideas for a diaper cake.  Ellen and her husband decided not to find out early if they were having a boy or a girl, so the cake decorations needed to be gender neutral. We thought Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar book fit the "nature" theme, it's colorful, and perfect for a boy or girl!

These are great instructions (with pictures of each step of the process) for building the cake.

The extra tips that we learned while making our cake....

1. Slide a skinny wooden dowel rod (that's one inch taller than the 3 tiered cake height) down the middle of the cake tiers to keep the cakes stable.
2. Place the board book on top of the cake (slightly opened) with the dowel rod in the middle. Then, paperclip the book closed.  This keeps the book from falling off the top of the cake.
3. Use small rubber bands to attach the toys and bath products.  We hooked the rubber band around the dowel rod then twisted it around the top of the lotion, soap, pacifiers or baby powder bottles.
4. Susan cut out all the foods that the caterpillar ate. To attach them to the cake, hot glue a toothpick to the back of the scrapbook paper and poke the toothpick in between the diapers.

Susan and I had so much fun making it and it was a hit at the baby shower!
